This is our Horse Lovers Outlet, Questions, and Answers Page, to some commonly asked, Horse Care questions.

I am not a veterinarian, and do not claim to have all the answers.  I have however, in my thirty plus years, of horse training and riding, developed a very good understanding of the physical and phsycological well being of the horse. If I feel confident helping you with your question, I will give you an answer, however, I always recommend consulting first with your veterinarian.

To ask a question, you would like to have an answer to, email me at:   info@horseloversoutlet.com

Please allow an appropriate amount of time for me to answer your questions, please don't send multiple emails on the same questions, as that only slows down my answering process. I will get to each and every question as soon as I can. Thank you.

Q.  How old should my horse be, before I start to ride him.

A.   There are a lot of people out there, that start their horses too young in my opinion, the best  thing to do, is to have your veterinarian examine your horse. Depending on the age, size and breed of your horse, your veterinarian will be able to let you know through x-rays, whether or not your horses bones and joints are ready to begin working.

Q. Can you recommend things to keep in a simple first aid kit.

A. First aid kits, varry in different barns, some items to keep close by, are; Your Veterinarians Phone Number, and you should also have, Alternate Veterinarian Phone Numbers, in case your Veterinarian is unavailable, Band Aids, in different sizes, Antibiotic Ointment, for wounds, or scrapes, Gauze Bandages, Nolvasan or a Betadine Solution, for cleaning wounds, Thermometer, either digital, or rectal, Vaseline, for use with thermometer, Scissors, Duct Tape, Cotton Roll, Leg Bandages, I like to have a Stethoscope, as well, to hear the horses heart rate, to make sure it's normal.

Q. What is a Bog Spavin?

A. There are two forms of spavin - bone spavin and bog spavin. Both affect the hock. Bog Spavin is excessive fluid in the largest of the hock joints. This can result in slight or severe enlargement of the hock. One or both hocks may be affected. It is more commonly seen in younger horses, although it can occur at any age. The increase in fluid can be the result of injury (trauma), degeneration of bone or cartilage in the joint (OCD), or joint infection (septic arthritis). There may be associated lameness which can range in degree from mild to severe depending on the cause.
Bone spavin is degenerative, non-septic arthritis of the smaller hock joints. It is more often seen in older horses and ponies and is a common cause of hind limb lameness. The lameness can range from mild stiffness with toe dragging to quite severe. It may affect one or both hind limbs. Radiographs (x-rays) taken of affected hocks can demonstrate a wide range of bone degeneration and damage which does not always directly correspond to the degree of lameness seen.
